FAQ's
Why work for Medilaw?
Working for a medico-legal group will:
- Increase your income
- Increase your exposure to a variety of clientele
- Increase your report writing skills
- Provide opportunities for travel
- Decrease your administration costs
Who are Medilaw’s clients?
Our clients include lawyers – plaintiff and defendant,
insurance companies, and government and non-government
agencies.
Where will I consult?
Medilaw has specialist consulting rooms at our head office in Brisbane and also in many regional areas.
Who will make the bookings?
All bookings are made through Medilaw.
What is the purpose of the assessment?
The purpose of assessment is to determine the existence and severity of a claimant’s injuries, and their impairment rating. A standardized, evidence-based report is subsequently provided to our client. Outcomes are not discussed with a claimant.
What is the account process?
As a consultant, you will forward a tax invoice at the end of the month which will state the claimant’s name, the date and location of your service, and your fee.
Will I be paid for claimants who fail to attend?
Yes. Medilaw will pay a failure-to-attend fee. In some instances where the claimant has been hospitalized or an emergency has occurred, we may request that the fee be waived.
How often will I consult?
We will work within your schedule. We will be happy to organise one or more assessments per week depending on your availability and our requirements.
How do I obtain the file histories?
Medilaw will compile the claimant’s file and will forward it to you for review prior to the assessment. A satchel is provided for the return of dictation tapes if applicable and relevant file material. All files will remain the property of Medilaw.
What dictating format is used?
Medilaw provides specific proformas for each specialty to assist with history collection and report compilation. As a consultant however, you are welcome to design your own proforma within Medilaw guidelines.
Do I use digital or tape dictation?
We prefer the efficiency of digital dictation as there are fewer problems with tape damage and transcription errors. Medilaw would be happy however, for you to use tapes if you prefer and we can provide you with micro tapes.
Who types the reports?
The typing and editing of reports is performed at Medilaw. Draft reports are then forwarded to you for your proofing. As a consultant, you may type your own report;
however Medilaw requires the final report formatting and printing to be completed by our staff.
What is the timeframe from assessment to the completion of the report?
Medilaw requires the dictation to be returned within two days of the consultation. A specialist will usually dictate the report immediately after an assessment, or at the
end of their session, to ensure all information obtained is recorded.
Does Medilaw offer training in Medco-legal report writing?
Yes. As medico-legal consulting is a specialised field we offer training in specific state legislation and in guideline requirements for different types of insurance and government bodies. Additionally, we have highly skilled consultants who may act as mentors and who can work closely with specialists to ensure the quality of completed reports.
Tell me about travel opportunities?
Although some consultants prefer to work only in their own state, many choose to travel interstate from time to time. All your travel arrangements will be organised and paid for by Medilaw.
